BOTOX®

No other single product or treatment has revolutionised aesthetic medicine as Botox® has. It's easy application and quick results have brought cosmetic medicine into the main stream and made it the number one cosmetic procedure for both women and men in the world.

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a brand name for  Botulinum  Type A; a natural protein chemically derived from bacteria in much the same way that penicillin is derived from mould. BOTOX® acts by blocking acetylcholine, a chemical transmitter that causes muscle contraction leading to the temporary blocking of the nerve impulses that contract the tiny muscles that are responsible for expression lines and wrinkles. This results in relaxation of the facial muscles which over time have caused significant wrinkles to develop in the overlying skin, hence allowing the distressed skin to rest resulting in a softer, relaxed, youthful look.

What are the common areas for treatment?

BOTOX® can be used to relax the frown lines (glabellar region), crow’s feet and forehead lines and can be used to give a “chemical brow lift”
In experienced hands it can also be used on its own or in conjunction with dermal fillers like Juvederm Ultra to enhance the mid and lower face, by treating drooping mouth corners, perioral (lipstick/smoker’s) lines, poppy chins, gummy smiles and overactive masseter muscles which give a square appearance to the lower face.

Who is suitable for BOTOX® treatment?

Commonly anyone between the ages of 18 and 65 are suitable. Older people may also have BOTOX® treatment, but results may not be as good.
Treating women is commonplace, but with the increased acceptance to maintain their looks and the pressures of the rat-race at work, more and more men are having BOTOX® to make them look and feel more relaxed and rested. This has been shown to not only  improve a person’s wellbeing but interestingly also to increase their employment potential!

Who is not suitable for BOTOX® treatment?

Typically those under the age of 18, pregnant and breastfeeding women and those with certain musculoskeletal conditions such as Myasthenia Gravis and Lambert Eaton Syndrome. Any other contraindications or cautions can be discussed at your consultation.

How long do the results last?

BOTOX® is administered via tiny needles injected into the skin. The procedure takes little more than a few minutes and discomfort is minimal. No additional anaesthesia is necessary. Results become apparent over the next 7-10 days and usually last on average of 3-4 months.

BOTOX® for Axillary Hyperhidrosis.

As BOTOX® also reduces sweating, it is common for active, ambitious and style conscious men and women  to consider BOTOX® treatment in the armpit area. Not only does this treat excess armpit sweating (Axillary Hyperhidrosis) but is being used cosmetically by business men to reduce the risk of sweating at the office meeting and by brides-to-be ready for their big day!

Is BOTOX® safe?

The overall safety of BOTOX® is well established having been approved by health authorities in over 70 countries. It has been used in hospitals for many years to treat all manner of conditions in adults and children including eye problems, migraine, tight neck muscles and spasms and been used cosmetically for almost 20 years.

The Natural Look

BOTOX® is a very effective treatment, but it is important that as it is a prescription only product it should be administered by medical professionals that understand its potency and have in depth knowledge of the underlying muscle structure. Failure to appreciate these factors can cause the “frozen-face” syndrome associated with early uses of BOTOX®. At The Westminster Clinic our principle doctors are all cosmetic dermatologists having a complete understanding of skin and muscle structures, with years of experience of using BOTOX® they pride themselves on delivering maximum and effective results from this procedure resulting in a natural, relaxed look..
